Meta CEO, in a video, today announced the release of early versions of its latest large language model, Meta Llama 3, and an image generator that updates pictures in real time while users type prompts, as it races to catch up to generative AI market leader OpenAI.
TakeAway Points:
- Meta released the latest version of its largest language model, Meta Llama 3.
- Meta AI, a free AI assistant, is available on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, among other social media sites.
- The report stated that the assistant can answer questions, create animations, and generate “high-quality” images.
Meta’s Latest Assistant, Meta AI
“We’re releasing the new version of Meta AI, our assistant that you can ask any question across our apps and glasses. Our goal is to build the world’s leading AI.”
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO, said in the video.
According to Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO, the virtual assistant Meta AI, which the company is promoting as the most advanced of its peerless free-to-use offerings, will incorporate the models.
The AI tool will compete with Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s viral hit ChatGPT, the assistant will have more prominent billing within Meta’s Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger apps, in addition to a new standalone website.
“We believe that Meta AI is now the most intelligent AI assistant that you can freely use,”
Zuckerberg said.
The release comes at a time when Meta is working to provide generative AI products to its billion-plus users in an attempt to overtake OpenAI as the market leader in the field. This work includes restructuring the computing infrastructure and combining disparate research and product teams.
According to Chris Cox, Meta Chief Product Officer, in an interview, the social media behemoth gave Llama 3 new computer coding skills and fed it photos in addition to text this time. However, for the time being, the model will only produce text.
Meta AI Use Cases
Meta AI has been built into the search box of the WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger apps to allow users to ask questions that can be answered through the new tool.
“The goal eventually is to help take things off your plate, just help make your life easier, whether it’s interacting with businesses, whether it’s writing something, whether it’s planning a trip,”
Cox said.
According to Cox, the addition of images to Llama 3’s training will improve the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses update that was released this year. Through a collaboration with Essilor Luxoticca, the glasses manufacturer, Meta AI will now be able to recognise objects seen by the wearer and respond to inquiries about them.
According to the release, users can also access Meta AI on the website “meta.ai,” where they can ask for assistance with tasks like completing a math problem or composing a formal email. Conversations can be recorded by users for later use.
Meta said the assistant’s image-generation feature will be available in beta on WhatsApp and the MetaAI website. Users will see an image appear as they start typing and MetaAI will provide prompts to help change or refine the image. The images can also be animated into a GIF that users can share.
Notably, a report stated that the Meta AI release today boosted Meta’s shares by 2%.
Meta AI’s First Launch and Future Plans
Meta initially unveiled Meta AI in beta at its September Connect event. The assistant will be available in English across more than twelve countries, including the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, starting Thursday.
Furthermore, the blog post highlighted the company’s commitment to building the best open models.
“Our goal in the near future is to make Llama 3 multilingual and multimodal, have longer context, and continue to improve overall performance across core LLM capabilities such as reasoning and coding.’
