What is a half dome?
Half dome is a virtual reality headset prototype that combines mechanical varifocal displays with a wider field of view than the original Rift, for improved visual immersion. It is Facebook’s first prototype virtual reality to achieve two key milestones. First, using Fresnel lenses, it supports a 140° field of view. Second, by physical movement of the screens, based on eye-tracking, it ensures that the image remains sharp, even when inspecting close objects.
The Challenges Attached To Half Dome Actualization
There are always challenges in the building stage of any technology. Half Dome is not an exception, Michael Abrash, chief scientist of FRL explained. The challenge is getting virtual monitors at a visual parity with real-time-world monitors, good image quality, high-resolution displays, and improved optics are also needed.
The Unveiling Of Half Dome
On Sep. 25, 2019, at the Oculus Connect 6, Abrash revealed his vision for a virtual workspace. One can use a virtual screen to configure and manage the space, also you can use the screen to manage Holograms and whiteboards. He mentioned some progress that the FRL team has made so far. From the invention of optics and until now, the half doom prototype series has been improved from half dome 1 to half dome 3. From half dome 2-3, the field of view is narrower than the first, and it’s 20% wider than the oculus quest.
Facebook’s Newest Proof of Concept VR headset; the Latest Metaverse Hardware
Facebook CEO, Mark Zukerberg, announced that he will be building a tech that will help people capture and share experiences from their point of view. Facebook collaborated with Ray-Ban, a stylish glass company to produce VR glasses. He said Ray-Ban is classy, and a good option considering how people already loved it. The VR glasses allow wearers to take photos, upload videos on Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp. Users can also listen to music and podcast, as well as take calls. He said that the $299 glasses will be quite an experience. He added that Facebook will not tamper with its privacy without authorization from the user.
