Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, said that combining two world-class teams into one unit will help increase the progress in AI.
“Combining all this talent into one focused team, backed by the computational resources of Google, will significantly accelerate our progress in AI.” Said Sundar.
He also said, “I’m so excited for the next phase of this journey, the progress we’ll make against our mission, and all the ways we’ll help people reach their potential with increasingly capable and responsible AI.”
In a comment, the CEO of DeepMind, Demis Hassabis, said that by joining forces with the Google Research team to create Google DeepMind, they would help to solve the biggest challenges facing humanity, and he is excited that he is working with them to create that.
“Combining our talents and efforts will accelerate our progress towards a world in which AI helps solve the biggest challenges facing humanity, and I’m incredibly excited to be leading this unit and working with all of you to build it. Together, in close collaboration with our fantastic colleagues across the Google product Areas, we have a real opportunity to deliver AI research and products that dramatically improve the lives of billions of people, transform industries, advance science, and serve diverse communities,” said Demis.
What is Google DeepMind?
Google DeepMind is a unit created to ensure the bold and responsible development of general AI by DeepMind and the Google Research Team.
The Brain team from Google Research and DeepMind will work together to ensure the smooth running of the unit. Google said that Demis would lead the development of general AI and report to Sundar. At the same time, Jeff Dean will be the Chief Scientist of Google Research and Google DeepMind, and Google Research will continue to lead fundamental advances in computer science across areas such as algorithms and theory, privacy and security, quantum computing, health, climate and sustainability, and responsible AI, and will report to James Manyika along with his existing Tech and Society teams.
With the call from Elon Musk and other tech leaders to stop the creation of AI for at least six months to ensure the safety of humanity, some companies are creating units to ensure the development of AI is safe.
