The creator and publisher of Eve Online, CCP Games, has officially announced the release of a new blockchain game named Project Awakening.
TakeAway Points:
- CCP Games has announced a new blockchain game called Project Awakening.
- The next Project Awakening playtest/hackathon will take place on May 21. Signups for the closed beta are currently live.
- Players will be able to “add their own features and functionality to the experience” because of the game’s blockchain features.
Project Awakening
The blog post provided the first look at information about the game world’s lore. Players will not be divided among instances in Project Awakening, according to CCP, as it will be a single-shard survival experience. “The dark expanse of space where civilization has withered in the ruin of its own ambition” is the setting for the story. Combat, repairing a “broken environment,” and survival are supposedly going to be the main gameplay focuses.
According to the report, there will be a playtest/hackathon for Project Awakening on May 21st, as per two posts made on the official game website on March 13. Signups for the closed beta are currently live.
Project Awakening on Blockchain
Additionally, according to CCP, Project Awakening will include some kind of blockchain gaming. It is still unclear, though, exactly how this will appear at launch.
“CCP Games is creating a persistent world bound by digital physics, where composability and programmability will enable players to build and collaborate on top, outside of, and within the emergent game environment – unlocking boundless creativity for third-party development via blockchain technology and cryptography,”
the CCP blog post stated.
Although information about Awakening is still limited, it is speculated that this suggests the game will allow ownership of digital assets, real estate, or some other type of blockchain-based commoditization.
According to Hilmar V. Pétursson, CCP Games CEO, players will be able to “add their own features and functionality to the experience” thanks to the game’s blockchain features. The Carbon Development Platform and MUD framework, which CCP uses for the game, were developed in partnership with blockchain developer Lattice, who also worked on the game’s implementation.
Justin Glibert, Lattice CEO, also highlighted that the new game will be “a universe where actions have consequences.”
